King Abdullah International Gardens
3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop
March 2009

Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted anything here but I just got release permission for this image.

This is an image I was commissioned to produce recently for Barton Willmore/Buro Happold (Joint Venture), of the King Abdullah International Gardens scheme in the Saudi Central Region. (www.kaig.net for more info).

I used a combination of mentalray for 3ds max design 2009 and Photoshop to complete the image, with extensive work in PFlow to achieve the trees (including custom birth script to generate one "tree" per vertex from the architects' plan and another version facing the sun for a tree shadow pass).

Please see the wire and phasing grabs below to see how the image was built up.

wire

phase 1 (raw render with basic geometry)

phase 2 (trees and details)

phase 3 (terrain details, paths, roads etc)

phase 4 (colour correction, people, cars, trains etc)

This one was a real challenge (mainly due to the trees and very basic terrain model) and came with a fairly tight deadline, but worked out well I think.

If anyone would like more detail about how I did the trees (PFlow and passes) please let me know and I'll be happy to post it up.

Comments very welcome as always.

Cheers,
